FDIC WOW!

What a great FDIC! Hats off to Bobby Halton and Diane Feldman, and all of the Fire Engineering team for pulling off another great show. We were pleased to have the George D. Post, Instructor of the Year Award on the main stage again! Dan Madryzkowski from NIST took this year's award. What a great guy! You can watch the award on the video coverage for FDIC on Fire Engineering.com.

Take risk or write it off. Part 2.

Back in January, I wrote a blog post asking the question, “Can we establish a common understanding of risk? Or.. should we write it off?” Because my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek when I posed the question, I don’t want the point to be missed. I believe our duty to ourselves and our beloved fire service cannot be separated from our duty to the citizens we are sworn to and are obligated to protect. What is good for us is good for them. My question is, are we seeing this trend to "let it… Continue

All Bark!

We all know fire fighters who talk a lot of talk, but fall short on the walk. They throw around the latest fire service buzz words and training topics, but are opportunistic in their implementation. This month's FE cartoon tackles this topic and poses the question "Are You All Bark?".

In my view, if you are going to preach wearing your apparatus seat-belt, then you should be the first to buckle-up. If you're going to squawk at others… Continue

Be the Change Agent and Stay Positive

I was talking to some old friends that I had worked with when I had originally got hired as a career firefighter. We were discussing the “good old days” and having a good laugh. We all have moved on to different departments and districts since then, but we all agreed that those were some the best times of our careers. The pay and benefits weren’t great, we had our share of issues with the city, but we were a tight group and we had a blast on duty.

Most of us have moved on to bigger… Continue

"Braithre Thar Gach Ni" Brotherhood Above All

I was asked to speak on Brotherhood at a local department's awards dinner. This is my pre-speech draft:

When I was young, I remember visiting the firehouse my Uncle worked in. The house in Pikesville Maryland, across the street from the Old Confederate Soldiers Home, housed Engine 2. It was a place of massive red trucks, squeezed together between brick walls and dark lighting, and tall men. I was too young to really understand what was going on around me, but there was a sense… Continue

More about the Master Exercise Practioner Program (MEP)

Previously I posted a comment from Emmitsburg about the Master Exercise Program and I thought that I'd update that by explaining the program. The MEP certification means that a candidate has successfully completed three weeks of instruction on the development, control and evaluation of exercises. The Master Exercise Practitioner Program (MEPP) eligibility includes local, Tribal, State, Territorial, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and other Federal agency emergency management/emergency…

It's hard missing someone

The 20th of September, a Saturday You chose to go your own way.

While riding along, the path you decided

Took an interesting turn, and to God you were guided.

You left us that day doing something you love

Now you watch and guide us from far up above.

We cherish your memories to help carry on,

Still though it hurts us to know that you’re gone.

It was out of our hands that He took you away

In hopes it… Continue

Mike Reed

I am deeply saddend to hear that Mike Reed slipped into eternity this last Saturday. Mike was a great guy and a wonderful instructor.
I've known him since our Wayne Twp days back in the early 1990's. He had taugh the first Safety Officer Class for us in Jasonville and all of the people loved his wit and attitude.

Our prayers to his family and many friends.
The Indiana Fire Service has lost a jem.

Straight tips vs. Fog nozzles

Straight tips vs. fog nozzles. Just putting this out for debate. My Dept does not have straight tips on any line. The few we have are locked away in compartments. Most lines are pre-connected with fog nozzles, I have a personal opinion. I believe we should split the nozzles half straight tip and half fog. I like straight tips for putting water on the fire and if the straight tip is used correctly it can keep both fire and water damage to a minimum.

Water "Pushing" Fire

Recently there's been a lot of talk about water "pushing" fire. I want to know people's opinions and personal experiences of this phenomena. For instance, consider the following scenario:

-First in engine

-driver/officer on engine only

-Heavy fire showing from side alpha (side c allows access inside)

With a limited crew do you try to knock some of the fire down by stretching to side alpha and hitting it quickly from the exterior until additional crews arrive.… Continue

Confined Space Supplied Air hose suggestions

My department has recently sent myself and a few other to a confined space operations and technician class. Upon doing some inventory to get our departments confined space program operational we discovered that we need bunch of supplied air hose. We currently have 200' of Scott air hose and are probably seeking to buy about 1000' more. My question is, in adventure of pricing what is the suggested length of hose? I realize 300' is the maximum distance a rescuer can go into a confined space. It… Continue

The Show Goes On

To My Brothers and Sisters in the Service:

So its been a few months now, and I still miss the Chief. The new guy is good. I like him, together with the other officer on our shift, we are forging a new team and it is working out well. I still miss Phil. I keep expecting him to come into the battalion's office at the big house, ...shouting out his familiar greeting. We all miss him. But as the film says, the show goes on. Rest in Peace, Brother.

Its been a long hard winter,… Continue

Hearing impaired fire fighters

Does anyone have any experience working with hearing impaired firefighters. We have had two of these people join our fire department. This is a new experience for all of us and I am not sure of the outcome. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Seat and Tool Assignments/Fire Ground Efficiency

I have been looking at ways to increase fire ground efficiency. I want to get some info on the different ways fire companies deploy resources on a structure fire.

The Following questions are based on a first alarm assignment. I want to isolate those initially assigned companies because they have the greatest impact on overall incident outcome. I am looking for honest real world answers not ideal situation answers.

What is the minimum total personnel assigned to a structure fire for a… Continue
