BOSTON GIVES DEATH A BAD DAY

In the aftermath of yesterday's cowardly act of terrorism in Boston, and as the injury report began to rise, I could only think about how much worse this violent act could have been if not for the quick action of Boston F.D., P.D., EMS, and U.S. National Guard. As I sat and watched the same horrific images over and over, my thoughts, prayers, and empathy were for our…

Bull’s-eye: Targets of Violence

While doing research for this blog, I came across a couple of very interesting articles that I will provide the links for and I would encourage you to read them and perhaps, pass them along. They were very enlightening and take my thoughts to a wider spectrum when thinking about responses and pre-plans. They can be found at the end of this piece.

With yesterday’s (April 10, 2013) incident in…

Rarified Air

A few days ago on March 27th, we were reminded of the 6th anniversary of the Firegeezer blog. It’s crazy, but I thought they had been around longer than that. It sure seems like it.

When I say “they”; of course I am referring to Bill Schumm and Perfesser Mike Ward. They complement each other very well. Bill is soft-spoken and a student of the history of the fire service and Mike Ward is an academian who can fire off…

Healthy Eating Rules for the Firehouse

What do you need for survival?  I’m not talking about your phone, technology or a certain person; I mean what does your body need to survive?  If you said food you would be correct… the single most important thing you need to focus on at that point is what to eat.…

ARMED AND DANGEROUS SITUATION

First, let me say that I am a supporter of the Second Amendment and our constitutional right as citizens to bear arms - so, calm down now before you read any further, I don't want your guns! That being said, I am not a supporter of any hypothesis where firefighters and first-responders are armed. I am not a cop, nor do I want to be! Law-enforcement is a highly…

What Do You Weigh?

As we all know, our job isn’t all about sitting around and reading novels, it can place us at an extraordinary cardiovascular level at a moments notice.  Due to this fact, we must prepare our bodies and our minds to overcome this demand to allow us to perform at an elite level.

We have all seen the firefighters who are in excellent physical condition who struggle to perform well at fire incidents, and many wonder why.  These firefighters train day in and day out to be able to increase…

Looking Down the Road

What are your motivations for promotion? Are you letting that goal get in the way of keeping yourself sharp in your current position?

Taking a Lesson from "Realty TV"

While I was watching the show Surviving the Cut the other night that highlighted the rigors of the training that the Nightstalkers (160th Special Aviation Regiment) go through, I had an epiphany, or at least I drew a corollary principle for what we should learn from this training in the fire service.

160th SOAR

The show portrayed the completion of a hellish, multiple-hours long training session that spanned from mental and…
