"One team, one fight"

Read norms do not make us firefighters, studying the SOP does not make us better firefighters, fulfill our shift does not make us better firefighters, today to be a firefighter goes beyond all that, it is to read every day, it is to study every day, it is to return to basics and share that with our brothers from the firehouse.

I spent just over two months at Latin America and I've noticed that they have forgotten to read, they have forgotten to share what they know, keeping it and do not teach each other, there is a kind of rivalry between those who know more and do not want anyone else to know like them or more than them, and, just share their knowledge in social meetings to let everyone know that they “know" a lot. There is a silly envy for those who have passed or may know more. They do not realize that this is not brotherhood, that's not friendship, that's not teamwork.

Could you imagine that our mentors had thought that way? We think this way and not go around the world teaching and keep us all, more siblings had fallen every day, and we were still working with buckets of water.

We do not stop reading, we do not stop to share things between us, investigate, ask and request our superiors that training, learn from them, learn from those who want to share.

Since we know something we can become instructors, but to be good instructors first must be good followers.

After dealing with some academies outside the U.S. I can say there is a lot to learn and much more to be taught, change the idea that everyone wants to learn but want to learn for themselves and not to share, learn good things, learn from firefighters who do not stop and wear the shirt proudly sharing his knowledge with his brothers.

Emergencies are faced in group, as a team and not alone!!

In one of my academy our motivation was: "One team, one fight" was not two, not three teams after two or three fights, it was one group against one emergency.

The football game is won on the field and from the outside, players and coaches, in the field of emergency are those inside (firefighters) and those outside (incident command), but they are all one team, and, why is it? Because each one has studied their role, responsibility and knows what to do and how to do it.

Leer normas no nos hace bomberos, estudiar los SOP no nos hace mejores bomberos, cumplir con nuestra guardia no nos hace mejores bomberos, ser bombero hoy en día va más allá de todo eso, es leer todos los días, es capacitarnos todos los días, es regresar a lo básico y compartir eso con nuestros compañeros del cuartel. 

He pasado algo más de dos meses por latino américa y me he dado cuenta que se han olvidado de leer, se han olvidado de compartir, lo que saben se lo guardan y no lo enseñan o lo enseñan a medias, hay una rivalidad entre los que saben más y no quieren que nadie más sepa como ellos o más que ellos, y; sólo lo comparten en reuniones para que todos sepan que “sabe” mucho. Hay una envidia tonta de los que se han superado o puedan saber más. No se dan cuenta que eso no es hermandad, que eso no es compañerismo, que eso no es trabajar en equipo.

Se imaginan que nuestros mentores hubiesen pensado así, que nosotros pensemos así y no vayamos por el mundo enseñando y nos guardemos todo, hubiesen más hermanos caídos todos los días, o estuviéramos aun trabajando con cubetas de agua.

No paremos de leer, no paremos de compartir las cosas entre nosotros, investiguemos, preguntemos y pidamos a nuestros superiores que nos capaciten, aprendamos de ellos, aprendamos de los que quieren compartir.

La aprendizaje en esta profesión no termina nunca, ser bombero es un trabajo 24/7 inclusive fuera de nuestra guardia; familiares, amigos, conocidos nos buscan para pedirnos concejos de algo, en problemas personales o de negocios, tenemos una carga en nuestros hombros difícil de liberarnos, porque así lo escogimos y porque nuestra comunidad se lo merece.

En uno de mis recorridos un bombero me preguntó que se necesita para ser instructor y enseñar, sólo le supe responder: Saber bien un tema y saber compartirlo.

Desde que sabemos bien algo nos podemos convertir en instructores, pero para serlo debemos ser buenos seguidores primero para ser buenos instructores.

Después de lidiar con algunas academias fuera de USA puedo decir que hay muchísimo por aprender y más por ser enseñado, hay que cambiar la idea que todos quieren aprender pero quieren aprender para ellos y no para compartir, aprendamos las cosas buenas, aprendamos de los bomberos que no se detienen y con orgullo llevan la camiseta compartiendo sus conocimientos con sus hermanos.

Las emergencias las enfrentamos en grupo, en equipo y no solos!!!!

En una de mis academias nuestra motivación era: “One team, one fight”, no era dos, ni tres equipos tras dos o tres peleas, era uno solo contra una sola emergencia.

El partido de futbol se gana en la cancha y desde afuera, jugadores y cuerpo técnico; en el campo de emergencias hay los que están dentro (bomberos) y los que están fuera (comando de incidente), pero todos ellos son un solo equipo, y; eso se debe que cada uno ha estudiado su rol, su responsabilidad y sabe muy bien que debe hacer y cómo hacerlo.
