Debt Ceiling Debate is in the Debt Gutter!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have had it with all of the political gamesmanship being played with our hard earned money.

While our “elected” officials enjoy CEO-style perks, the rest of us have to live within our budgets and all the while watch as our tax dollars are squandered by those elected to spend it wisely.

My income is taxed; my house that is paid for is taxed and everything that I purchased is taxed…

Slow the Game Down on Backstep Firefighter

For you baseball fans out there, you may recognize this phrase. Usually it is used in discussion about a player that has been struggling and the team has been working with him to slow the game down, so they are better prepared and better able to react. As with many ideas and practices from Major League sports, there are applications in the fire service. This is another case of us being smart enough to learn from others.

At Backstep Firefighter and The Front Seat, we often…

They get it!

I saw this in the paper a few days back.  Someone taught them good!

What do they have? A Vacant Storefront, 90+ degree temps outside and no exposure problems.

Not because this is my old department but examples of this reinforce the concept that some departments just "get…

BITING THE HAND THAT FEEDS

When I was a kid, I would see a fireman and instantly see a person of authority and respect. Not being raised in a fire service family, that respect came from their uniform and job - not to mention that BIG red truck! As a matter of fact, when I was four, our home burned one winter…

Perhaps many of you may have noticed that it has been a month since my last blog or maybe you haven’t.

You see; my life has seen some changes.

Changing jobs is never easy.

Those comforts that we surround ourselves with over the course of many years with…

Those are intented for protecting the truck and occupants in fire entrampments, remaining protected in the truck's cabin.

Are We Missing The Target?

For those of you that follow the news and happenings of the fire service, you may have noticed an increase in the number of bailouts reported. Now certainly some of this is a result of the media figuring out that a firefighter bailing out isn’t a normal occurrence, so as one outlet begins reporting it, others follow suit. But it begs the question, why? Why are so many of our brothers bailing out? Have that many incidents occurred where things have gone that wrong?

This year’s…

Round Table Review - Seat Belt Policy

Just a quick recap of last question. Does your department have a mandatory seat belt policy? Is it enforced and who is responsible for its enforcement?  Does the officer have any culpability if a firefighter knowingly violates the policy and should he?

13 responses were all pretty identical (with the exception of 1).

All 13 said their department had a policy. Only one said that it was never enforced even with accidents and injuries. It was interesting that 4 of the responses we from… Continue

Too BIG

...and sometimes I just feel the need to be silly!!  I do find it humorous to walk the streets of Indianapolis during FDIC and see the sea of hulking SUV's lining the parking lanes and garages. I'm just glad the Hummer craze didn't catch on in the fire service - oy!
