Mike Reed

I am deeply saddend to hear that Mike Reed slipped into eternity this last Saturday. Mike was a great guy and a wonderful instructor.
I've known him since our Wayne Twp days back in the early 1990's. He had taugh the first Safety Officer Class for us in Jasonville and all of the people loved his wit and attitude.

Our prayers to his family and many friends.
The Indiana Fire Service has lost a jem.

Straight tips vs. Fog nozzles

Straight tips vs. fog nozzles. Just putting this out for debate. My Dept does not have straight tips on any line. The few we have are locked away in compartments. Most lines are pre-connected with fog nozzles, I have a personal opinion. I believe we should split the nozzles half straight tip and half fog. I like straight tips for putting water on the fire and if the straight tip is used correctly it can keep both fire and water damage to a minimum.

Water "Pushing" Fire

Recently there's been a lot of talk about water "pushing" fire. I want to know people's opinions and personal experiences of this phenomena. For instance, consider the following scenario:

-First in engine

-driver/officer on engine only

-Heavy fire showing from side alpha (side c allows access inside)

With a limited crew do you try to knock some of the fire down by stretching to side alpha and hitting it quickly from the exterior until additional crews arrive.… Continue

Confined Space Supplied Air hose suggestions

My department has recently sent myself and a few other to a confined space operations and technician class. Upon doing some inventory to get our departments confined space program operational we discovered that we need bunch of supplied air hose. We currently have 200' of Scott air hose and are probably seeking to buy about 1000' more. My question is, in adventure of pricing what is the suggested length of hose? I realize 300' is the maximum distance a rescuer can go into a confined space. It… Continue

The Show Goes On

To My Brothers and Sisters in the Service:

So its been a few months now, and I still miss the Chief. The new guy is good. I like him, together with the other officer on our shift, we are forging a new team and it is working out well. I still miss Phil. I keep expecting him to come into the battalion's office at the big house, ...shouting out his familiar greeting. We all miss him. But as the film says, the show goes on. Rest in Peace, Brother.

Its been a long hard winter,… Continue

Hearing impaired fire fighters

Does anyone have any experience working with hearing impaired firefighters. We have had two of these people join our fire department. This is a new experience for all of us and I am not sure of the outcome. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ted R. Kolb
Past Deputy Chief

Seat and Tool Assignments/Fire Ground Efficiency

I have been looking at ways to increase fire ground efficiency. I want to get some info on the different ways fire companies deploy resources on a structure fire.

The Following questions are based on a first alarm assignment. I want to isolate those initially assigned companies because they have the greatest impact on overall incident outcome. I am looking for honest real world answers not ideal situation answers.

What is the minimum total personnel assigned to a structure fire for a… Continue

Am I too emotionally weak for this profession?

I'm no veteran to this life as a firefighter, but I'm no rookie either. I've seen messed up things in life doing this job just as much as the next firefighter, but sometimes this job really gets to me. I don't know what's down this road anymore. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, but sometimes it seems like it. I try to stay strong and show it doesn't bother me, but I think it's really getting to me now. I guess it got to my husband as well. From one of my previous blog posts some… Continue

The Best Example of Why We Must Be Prepared...

I sent this out to all of the people in my Battalion today and thought I'd share with you all. Hope you enjoy it.

Below are three links that will let you see the recent interview on "60-Minutes" with the crew of U.S Airway Flight 1429. I want you to watch all three portions. Make sure when you watch them, you can give them your full attention. Though these videos are obviously about the flight and subsequent successful rescue of all 155 passengers, a subtle comparison can… Continue

Ladder co. 72/Commercial Fire

On Jan 20th, Snohomish County F.D. #7 was toned out for a Commercial Fire Response at the Waste Management depot site in 72's first due area.

Ladder co. 72, led by Lt. Prince, was first to arrive and reported heavy smoke coming from a mechanic truck bay with a vehicle inside on fire. The vehicle was a Waste Management Garbage Truck. At that point the large roll up door suddenly came crashing down with no warning. Ladder 72 advised that they would be forcing entry and to have the first due… Continue

Take some time to keep-up with research that is important to all of us.

Often, we get caught-up in seeking information about tactics and task level training needs and desires. Additionally, a lot our members (especially the younger ones) spend a significant amount of searching the Internet for dramatic fire “videos”. Don’t get me wrong, there is value to both of these pursuits. However, I would also encourage all members from all age and seniority groups to spend more time looking at, reading and learning from several on-going research projects that have real… Continue

The Brotherhood...what gives

What does the brotherhood mean to you? Well for me it means this.

The brotherhood is a family who at time will fight but will forgive and forget.

The brotherhood does not try to change rules or ask for them to be changed to meet their needs.

The brotherhood understands and accepts that it is part of a family that has sisters who are just a much as the family as they are.

The brotherhood understands its more then a title and a t-shirt.

The… Continue

My Big Move!

I make my big move to the east coast this Friday. I am really excited, but at the same time nervous to venture out of what I call "Home". I am moving to Prince Georges County, MD. Specifically as a "live-in" Firefighter/EMT with the Laurel Vol. Rescue Squad Company 49. It was a decision I decided to make a few months ago. I wanted to gain to experience and saw my chance. They run a Rescue-Engine, Squad, Ambulance and a Dive unit mostly volunteer. They run about 6,000 calls out of one station. I… Continue

From My Mother.

My mother e-mailed this to me. I figured I would share it with you guys.

A Mother's Prayer

The alarm goes off, ready to go, all with no hesitation. Time to save a soul or a home, straight to that destination. This prayer's for my daughter, as that fire calls. Protecting the innocent and fighting flaming walls. Guide her with your strength, the courage to pull her through, give her that breath of air if she gets down to her last few. By chance she may get weak do give her… Continue

My Dad Was A Firefighter.

My dad was a firefighter. He'd go to work everyday and say wish me luck. Then he wouldn't come home til sometime the next day, but the thing that bothered me the most is when people would say a firefighters job is easy. He eats, sleeps, and plays, and sometimes won't fight a fire for days. When I first heard these words I was too young to understand but I knew when people were in trouble my dad was there to lend a hand. Then my father went to work one day and kissed us all goodbye. Later that… Continue
