We received our new truck yesterday!

Maybe some of you would not understand the happines, but for us, firefighters from a country that doesn't spend much on Fire equipment, we are very very happy. Yesterday, on a cold, rainy morning, Miraflores 28th Fire Station received the new pumper truck, a new truck in 28 years! We didn't care about the cold weather, we were so exited to jump inside the truck and sound the horn to demostrate everyone in the city our entusiasm. We… Continue

Serving Inside out instead of Serving outside looking in....

Having been a Fire Chaplain for over 25 years has made me love fire service so much more than I did when I got started. Starting out at a volunteer/partially paid department and learning on the job really did a number on my initial confidence. that I kept asking myself " why do these guys spend double or triple what they make to be on call for extreme times and have to work a job with this commitment to even be here?"

It all started when I was a new mission pastor in town and was… Continue

Mentoring: Just ask. We've got your back.

I wrote this in the "Who Are Your Mentors?" Post earlier today. A brother in a small town and difficult situation needed some help and this is what I came up with then and there. The beauty of this site is that we can reach out to each other and make a difference. Back when I was in his shoes, I didn't have this resource. What a difference it would have made! So here's what I wrote to him. I posted it here because just maybe there is someone else out there in the same boat, looking for a…

Ladder co. 72 first due with Heavy Fire

At 10:45, Snohomish County F.D. # 7 was dispatched to the report of a residential fire in Ladder 72's first due. I was the Acting Lt. that day, and reported a thermal column 2 miles out. Ladder 72 arrived and reported a 2 story split level residential fully involved on the "A" side and heavy fire blowing out of every window on the 2nd floor of the "C" side.

Battalion 71 arrived and established Command. Engine co. 71 arrived (in an antique pumper!) and stretched a…

NEAR FOOLS History made!

The first official meeting of the E board of the NEAR chapter of FOOLS International was held last night. This was truly a night of Brotherhood. We discussed what direction we wanted to lead our chapter in and how to spread the word. We are up to 10 members now with more to come. Let me assure you that duty, pride, and tradition are alive and well in Jonesboro, AR. I haven't felt that recharged, that fired up for the fire service since FDIC 08. Good things are about to happen. We began a "new"… Continue

The on deck concept.

Has anyone out there heard of the on deck concept. I think phoenix may be using it but im looking for any other departments that may be using it or is contemplating adding it to there department. The concept is instead of initiating a RIT or other type of fire ground function you have a crew ready on standby to do whatever assignment you need them to do. Then once that crew is assigned another one takes there place. Any info on this would be helpful. Thanks

More Convention Thoughts

A few thoughts about the Convention and mentoring. While I was in Seattle, I was really blessed to have time with a former member of my company. This is an upstanding young fireman and just seeing him again was good, but to see him succeeding at being a probie in a large department made me feel really good. In Alaska, so many of the young brothers move on to bigger and better things and we rarely get time to see them as they move into their own.

So we're walking along talkin' about his new… Continue

Once again home from my travels. This time It was a 12 hour flight home.

Which in most cases would have taken me almost to New Zealand or

somewhere warmer or more interesting. On the return flight I was able

to enjoy most of the remaining villages scattered throughout what is

considered YK that I had not been too.

Warrior Poets

I just got back from the FOOLS Convention in Seattle and I'm still riding high from it, a little wound up, a little melancholy, a bit homesick. Funny, I had never met most of the firemen and women I met down there, yet so many of them have left a mark on me, a h*** in my soul that I cannot fill, now that I am gone from them again. We shared many great moments. Like John and Walt on the Pipes, the helmets stack halfway up the wall, and Gilbert becoming one with the barrier, the Pub crawl and… Continue

Knox County Pandemic Flu Exercis

Kudo's to Chief Shawn Kristie, Mt. Vernon Fire Dept for his department's involvement in the Knox County Health Department 2008 Pandemic Flu Exercise. It was good to see fire, EMS and law enforcement all sitting at the same table working through many problems that would concern their departments during this type of incident. All of public safety needs to develop this attititude to public health emergencies. Mt. Vernon PD, Knox County Sheriff, County EMS, Citizens Crop, Medical Reserve Corp…

Proper Line Placement

This is an excellent photo of proper line placement. The first line at almost every fire should be positioned so as to cut the spread of fire. I realize that the great temptation is to put water on the fire. However, in this case, more good things will happen if the initial line is stretched between savable victims and the fire - or between savable property and the fire - do one you do both!

Congratulations Northbrook Il. FD…
