Everything is Cummulative

I am currently an Intern - Strength and Conditioning Coach at Military and Mountain Athlete in Jackson, Wyoming and will be returning to Northern California in September. Upon returning to California, I plan on doing an observational research study on Wildland Firefighters that will be the foundation of future research and what I have been working towards since entering the fire service in 2005.

I want to change the health culture of the fire service in a way that positively affects…

The Attack Line

A few years ago while working in Fairfax County we ran a website that was based on the two county fire departments and the one city department that ran together on calls everyday. It was MutualBox.com and that site contained information about fires, apparatus, operating procedures, equipment and most important tactical advice and commentary. We were able to get one of the most respected and disciplined fire officers from Arlington County, VA. to write some articles for the site. As I was…

Debt Ceiling Debate is in the Debt Gutter!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have had it with all of the political gamesmanship being played with our hard earned money.

While our “elected” officials enjoy CEO-style perks, the rest of us have to live within our budgets and all the while watch as our tax dollars are squandered by those elected to spend it wisely.

My income is taxed; my house that is paid for is taxed and everything that I purchased is taxed…

They get it!

I saw this in the paper a few days back.  Someone taught them good!

What do they have? A Vacant Storefront, 90+ degree temps outside and no exposure problems.

Not because this is my old department but examples of this reinforce the concept that some departments just "get it"!

This is an old storefront on the East Side of town.   Probably built around…

BITING THE HAND THAT FEEDS

When I was a kid, I would see a fireman and instantly see a person of authority and respect. Not being raised in a fire service family, that respect came from their uniform and job - not to mention that BIG red truck! As a matter of fact, when I was four, our home burned one winter evening and I remember a fireman coming over to console my parents and even…

Chief Reason with a Sit Rep!

Perhaps many of you may have noticed that it has been a month since my last blog or maybe you haven’t.

I also missed my first Fire Engineering Talk Radio show in July. I hope to do the August show, but for right now, it is beyond my control.

You see; my life has seen some changes.

Changing jobs is never easy.

Those comforts that we surround ourselves with over the course of many years with…

Fiber glass curtains for fire trucks

I remeber to had read an article in this magazine about fiber glass curtains for forest fires trucks, but I can't find the info.

Those are intented for protecting the truck and occupants in fire entrampments, remaining protected in the truck's cabin.

Someone recalls that article or simmilar info??

PREDATORS ARE LURKING ABOUT

Look-out folks, the 9/11 predators are out in force!!! They are selling everything from "commemorative" ball caps to stickers, patches, posters, helmets, t-shirts, t-shirts, t-shirts, and t-shirts! Some say they're selling these items for a charitable donation (and that's fine) - but please check their true intentions before buying. Verify the charity, if you can. I…

Round Table Review - Seat Belt Policy

Just a quick recap of last question. Does your department have a mandatory seat belt policy? Is it enforced and who is responsible for its enforcement?  Does the officer have any culpability if a firefighter knowingly violates the policy and should he?

13 responses were all pretty identical (with the exception of 1).

All 13 said their department had a policy. Only one said that it was never enforced even with accidents and injuries. It was interesting that 4 of the responses we from… Continue

Too BIG

...and sometimes I just feel the need to be silly!!  I do find it humorous to walk the streets of Indianapolis during FDIC and see the sea of hulking SUV's lining the parking lanes and garages. I'm just glad the Hummer craze didn't catch on in the fire service - oy!

OUT OF TOUCH

If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then this technology intrenched generation of youth is from the center of Pluto! Old-school thinking and marketing will be the death knell of today's fire service, especially in the volunteer sector with we don't learn to be creative in our recruiting methods.

How is your department coping with these…

The Perfect Storm

The term “A perfect storm” refers to a combination of events that contributes to the drastic aggravation of a situation. From severe weather to a seeming unfathomable chain of events, this phrase is widely used.

In the fire service,…

One Blog Under God!

On Sunday, June 19th, NBC decided to show a patriotic montage during the showing of the U.S. Open golf tournament (Patriotic video). As a result, they committed a monumental error in their omissions.

The Pledge of Allegiance that I have been reciting since grade school has included the words “one nation under God, indivisible”. That any of the words from this very short, but very powerful recitation be omitted is very…

Thoughts of a Garden Variety

These past, few months have been “unusual” for me. For the first time in many years, I had to prepare myself to seek employment. It was my goal to have a new job before the lay-off became effective.

My work as a risk manager for my current employer will end on June 24th. My work for my new employer will start on June 28th.

What is interesting to note is that I thought that I bombed at the interview and who knows; maybe the…

FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER

If you carry a cell phone these days, you carry a camera and video recorder, too. Technology has made life recordable, anywhere, anytime, even when it's inconvenient or inappropriate! Take a moment to notice bystanders on your next MVA or structure fire; my guess is you'll see plenty of cell phones out recording our every move. This is the technological world we live…
