More of "Too Hot" Stuff

I Blogged last (February 5th. to be exact) on "How do you know when it's getting too hot when you are inside a fire building"? I extend the question!

God Love Billy Goldfeder! He sends out his "Secret List" and as we all should be aware, most of us are dying responding to and returning from incidents. If you look at the list of other ways we are dying and getting hurt "really bad", collapses of floor assemblies is at the top of the list.

Many are as a result of fires… Continue

Why?

It's a simple question, really - what would you miss out on if you unexpectedly died? There's no doubt, whether you're career or volunteer, that this is a dangerous profession - and the importance of seatbelts is not a new philosophy. But year after year we read the latest LODD report about yet another Brother or Sister being lost to this asinine complacency! I don't get it! We train on flashover, we train on orientation, we train on tactics,… Continue

Valuable Asset

I am a sucker for old war stories. Just begin any sentence with “well in my day...”, and I’m hooked like a kid in a toy store. These stories do more than just relive a nostalgic time and event, they educate and provide valuable information about structures, fire, tactics, and of course the character of the men that came before us. Our retirees have much more to offer than the occasional parade march or annual fireman’s ball fodder. Let them know… Continue

Spot The Future Politician Game

Sometimes I'm just overcome by fits of silliness, and of course, it's always fun to prod the politicians.

Rookie's and Veteran's

As a fire service instructor over the years I have met a lot of fellow firefighters and not until recently did I realize the stories from these firefighters were always the same from rookies and veterans. The rookies always say “we don’t fit in” and the veterans always say “ the rookies just don’t get it”. I guess the reason it didn’t hit me sooner was as a fire service instructor and as a company officer it is my responsibility to teach the rookies and the veterans on safety and the job. Each… Continue

MURPHY'S THREE RULES FOR LONGEVITY

Firefighters

Looking at the statistics for 2009 Firefighter Fatalities there are three main causes of firefighter deaths – CARDIAC ARREST, APPARATUS SPEED and FAILURE TO WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS.

I know that you do not have a death wish so a bit of advice labeled as:

MURPHY’S THREE RULES FOR LONGEVITY:

1) BUCKLE YOUR SEATBELTS before any vehicle you drive or sit in moves from the apparatus bay, parking lot or your garage

2) SLOW DOWN – you cannot help…

"Training Sir!"

Training is supposed to be training right? What do you want out of training? I can certainly tell you what I want out of training: the opportunity to learn something new or refresh skills/knowledge. Sometimes it seems like training officers come up with topics because they like them or want to learn more about that area of knowledge. Walk-arounds and building inspections are one of the most valuable training topics which I learned from a District Chief I used to work with at another…

Too Hot #2

Alright! The blog has been there for weeks. Only one comment. I just finished teaching to 100 or so firefighters from the south east. No one there had an answer!

I really can't believe it. 300,000 firefighters in the United States and no one can tell us how to tell if it's getting too hot in the atmosphere they are in.

Come on - if your shy, get over it and help us out. How do you monitor heat conditions inside a burning…

Blockhead Mentality

Added by Paul Combs on January 22, 2010 at 7:00pm — No Comments

I don't know how to feel about this...

So I spoke with a department psychologist and they told me that I have post traumatic stress disorder. I have nothing against PTSD and I think it's something to take serious, but I'm not sure exactly how I feel about being told I have it. Even if I accept it I have no idea what to do for it or anything about it.
