Where firefighters come to talk training

Seriously, are you truly dedicated to the fire service?

Before we debate your dedication to the fire service lets first look at the definition of dedication.

Dedication - the quality of being dedicated or committed to a task or purpose.

You will quickly notice it does not mention or measure someone’s dedication. There is no calculation to quantify your level of dedication.  There are many levels that different individuals dedicate to the fire service. Some put themselves out there 24/7, reading, writing, learning, sharing, taking every training seminar, webcast etc. Some firefighters are on the complete opposite other end of the spectrum.

Whichever side of the spectrum you sit on or even somewhere in the middle is your decision. Today’s short blog is not directed at those who as Eric Roden described in his 2014 FDIC keynote as overachievers

As Chief Eric Roden admitted, I too am an overachiever. Which, the fire service needs. Recently a video posted to a popular social media site which highlighted a downside to being an over achiever.

This short video by Lieutenant, Lockport Township (IL) Fire District, is a subtly reminder of what’s important.

All too often, we, as overachievers forget what is truly important, our families!

So please watch this short video then close the computer, put the mobile device or table away and go spend time with your family. Do not take granted what you have today because the future is unknown and you never know what tomorrow will bring!
