Where firefighters come to talk training

Atlanta Chief Kelvin Cochran, possible USFA Director

I recently had the opportunity to speak at the IAFC Metro fire chief’s conference, while there; I briefly asked Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran if he was being vetted currently for the job of director for the United States fire administration. While Chief Cochran could neither confirm nor deny that he was currently having his background investigation conducted. It did appear that the chief is under consideration and probably will accept the position, if it is offered to him. In speaking with the chief, he was very clear that he did not apply on his own, others had nominated him for the position. However it would be foolhardy to believe that any officer of his standing and credibility would not accept such an important and influential position.

In speaking with many of the chiefs in attendance at the conference there was widespread belief that Kelvin would do a good job. I hope that if the job is offered to the chief that he will accept. So if the rumors are true, and I have every reason to believe that they are, I would like to be the first to say congratulatons and good luck.

Having only briefly met him at the EGH Summit this year, he was very dynamic and energetic in his demeanor and presentation. I am sure he will bring the same vigor and positive attitude to the USFA. I wish him the best if this comes to fruition. Good luck Chief.
