I read two line of
duty death reports from the USFA yesterday…we all need to read them. It does not say how or why these good men died, but that is the point. Not knowing gives us an opportunity to look at ourselves and speculate what might have caused their deaths and focus us on what we should be doing to protect ourselves, those we care for, and those that we work with.
I copied…

I suppose we all have pet peeves. As anal as I am, I have more than my share. One of them is what is shown in the photo above. Now, to be fair, no water is flowing (yet) and I am sure that the men and women of the Pawtucket fire department are among the best in the country. But - what's the firefighter doing at the tip of the aerial?
In my opinion, he or she is in one of the most dangerous positions a firefighter can put themselves in - and…

What do these two little words mean to you in your life? They have different meanings for all of us I’m sure, but, how much thought do we give to these words in our Professional lives as Firemen and as Brothers?
In our everyday lives we are engaged in sports, playing, coaching, watching, etc. We are engaged in our families, by being loving husband or wives, fathers or mothers, watching our children grow into well rounded adults. We own cars, houses, computers, cell phones, you name…

I am a BIG believer in SOGs (or, SOPs depending on your Department). Standard Operating Guidelines are the foundation for how we approach most incidents and a baseline for what is expected of us as firefighters. Although it is up to ALL of us to follow and uphold our Department's SOGs, I'm putting this commentary on the…

On Nov. 2, the people of Arizona will decide whether to amend the state constitution to bar the government from discriminating against or granting preferences to individuals or groups in public employment, contracting, and education. I wholeheartedly support Proposition 107, the Arizona Civil Rights Initiative. A person’s race, ethnicity, or skin color should not be a part of their promotion or the application process. Individuals should be promoted, hired, or admitted based on their…

I have a great friend; he is provocative, insightful, and funny. He is the kind of guy that you never know what he is going to do next. He voted for President Obama then showed up at the Courage and Valor Fun Run this year wearing a T-shirt with former President George W. Bush’s picture on it and the caption “Miss Me Yet?” He is not afraid to change his mind or speak it; he has courage in his convictions, and…

Having a difficult time determining the best practice for flushing/back flushing these installations. Believe that pressurizing them with an inch-and-a-half or larger is causing uncemented plastic fittings to come apart or to leak. Saw the comments about letting the "dust settle" and gravity feeding some portion of the tank water down the h*** before priming. We have milfoil trouble, is anyone doing anything about invasive specie? Thanks for any suggestions
