Kudo's to Chief Shawn Kristie, Mt. Vernon Fire Dept for his department's involvement in the Knox County Health Department 2008 Pandemic Flu Exercise. It was good to see fire, EMS and law enforcement all sitting at the same table working through many problems that would concern their departments during this type of incident. All of public safety needs to develop this attititude to public health emergencies. Mt. Vernon PD, Knox County Sheriff, County EMS, Citizens Crop, Medical Reserve Corp…

I had the distinct honor, for which I have to admit I am poorly qualified for as compared to most of you, to be the first keynoter at the International FOOLS convention in Seattle this week. It may very well be the most humbling event of my career because of the caliber of men and women which I was asked to address. I am so proud to be a member in good standing of this outstanding organization. Although many, who are…

It is fitting to reflect that 36 years ago the City Boston lost nine men in the line of duty on Commonwealth Ave and Dartmouth Street after a three hour firefight when without warning a sudden collapse took the lives of nine of Bostons bravest. The Vendome Hotel Fire memorial is dedicated to the memories and legacy of those nine Boston members firefighters killed that afternoon Lieutenant Thomas J. Carroll, Lieutenant John E. Hanbury,…

ContinueFire companies using outdated equiptment and being taught outdated training methods is common in the American fire service and it cuts across all departments types and sizes. I have listened to firefighters talk about being unable to affect change within their company or department. These are not style issues. These firefighters are presenting factual data and willing to test their tools against what is currently in use. They are rebuffed at…

However, in this case, more good things will happen if the initial line is stretched between savable victims and the fire - or between savable property and the fire - do one you do both!
Congratulations Northbrook Il. FD…
