Far too many officers, whether it be insecurity or ego driven,
demand their due respect - for it is more important and self-serving to be recognized by rank than as an effective leader. Respect is earned by action alone, not self-gratification. Earn your subordinate's trust, and respect will come naturally.

I love Halloween! It's my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year, so it only seemed appropriate to combine the "witching hour" into my latest commentary.
She really is brewing quite a disaster, and sadly, it doesn't take a witch to cook-up this poison - we do a fine job, ourselves.

Due to numerous comments, I'd like to take a moment and highlight one of my recent Fire Engineering mag illustrations.
The illustration in question tackles the topic of firefighter suicide and the fact that we can't always see the underlying problems that lead to this shattering conclusion. This topic had been eating away at me for over a year before settling on a visual commentary. In 2008, my Department went through such an ordeal…

Stop The Bleeding! Stop The Insanity!
With the avalanche of job losses, budget cuts, and equipment shortages - creating June's FE illustration felt appropriate and needed. Thoughts?

No explanation is needed for this month's editorial illustration, and I'm sure we've all had to deal with bad attitudes before. The question I'd like to pose to the forum is; what have you done (or would do) to deal with this type of firefighter? Because if left unchecked, they will literally swallow-up the morale and spirit of the…

We all know fire fighters who talk a lot of talk, but fall short on the walk. They throw around the latest fire service buzz words and training topics, but are opportunistic in their implementation. This month's FE cartoon tackles this topic and poses the question "Are You All Bark?".
In my view, if you are going to preach wearing your apparatus seat-belt, then you should be the first to buckle-up. If you're going to squawk at others…
