Mentor Program

I am looking for a Mentor Program that others might have within their Fire Departments.  If anyone has an actual written document explaining the program, that would be great.  If you do not have it written but can describe it, that is fine too.  Anything to help would be much appreciated.  Thank you allSee More

Challenge Traditions

I was watching an Agricultural show the other morning and they were talking about the severe drought that California farmers are facing.  A farmer who was interviewed stated that California is saying they have to limit their water usage but still expect the same output of crop and payment of bills that come along with it.  After the interview, the host of the show said something that I found very interesting and fitting into our world.  He said: If the California farmers are going…See More

"Outside The Box" Engine Company Operations

Engine Company work is often viewed as easy or not as fulfilling as "Truck Company work". This is absolutely not the case and some very "high speed" Engine Companies go to work everyday in very tough and arduous environments. They are only successful by relying on their relentless training, personal experiences and hunger to progress in the engine world. This group is geared toward Engine Company tactics that use "outside the box" thinking to accomplish. Its purpose is to exchange information…See More

The Fireground and Football

When we think of football greats, particularly quarterbacks, what makes them great?  Touchdowns?  Passing yards?  What about the ability to read a defense and know that when they set the play in motion, it will be a success not by chance, but by proper recognition of their opponent and confidence in their choice of counter measure against them.  If this is a factor in determining a great quarterback, then who better to demonstrate this skill than the recent Touchdown King himself, Mr. Peyton…See More

Recognizing Trends and the need for a change in Response

Take a trip with me for a minute……Beep beep beep beep: “Attn: Fire Dept, Working structure fire 555 W 555 N.  Caller advised flames visible”.  This is what you hear out of your pager.  You race to the fire station.  As you run in, you see 5 other members putting on their PPE.  Your response guideline says 1st two trucks out the door are Engine 1 and Engine 2 with the 3rd being a water tender.  3 of you jump in Engine 1 and the other 3 jump in Engine 2 and begin your way to the…See More

Small Town Tactics and Tools

Small Town Tactics and Tools is a group designed to help firefighters who protect rural and suburban areas. As the name suggests, we discuss tactics and tools and everything in between including training, leadership, manpower and water struggles, current fire events, and science. If you're from a department who protects rural and suburban areas, this is the group for you. If you're an urban firefighter this is a great place to get a general idea of what these men and women deal with in these…See More

The "Keyboard Experts"

How much is enough?

There has been a lot of talk lately about "shutting down" these so called "keyboard experts".  People call these keyboard experts out and demand their experience on the fire ground and often label these…
