- Bryan Altman is a Lieutenant for the Worth County (GA) Fire Department. He is an 8 year veteran of the fire service. He began his career with the Tifton-Tift Co. (GA) Fire Department and was there for 3 years and then went to Ashburn Fire and Emergency Services (GA) and was there for 4 years serving as Lieutenant. He spent 2011 as a full time instructor and Captain with the Georgia Fire Academy teaching the Basic Firefighter Program and assisted with live fire classes, he is still an adjunct instructor for GFA. He had the honor of teaching at the Metro Atlanta Firefighters Conference in 2012 and also had a article published in the 2012 October issue of FireEngineering magazine and on the Fire Training Toolbox Website. He is certified as a Firefighter 2, Acting Officer, Live Fire Instructor, Basic Firefighter Instructor, Fire Instructor 2, Diploma in Fire Science Technology, and is Georgia F.L.A.M.E.S. COD # 159.

Do ya feel lucky? Well, you shouldn't...
Have you ever heard someone say on the fireground or back at the firehouse, "Man I sure was lucky on that one", I have and I thought to myself, why do they say or feel that way? Shouldn't we be saying, "Man, if it weren't for my training I wouldn't have got out of that situation". Your training is what you fall back to each and everyday. Training? Why do we have to do that?
So many times I hear "Why do we have to train?" or "Why is it so important?". When I hear these comments I can't help but get upset and mad. But I have had to remind myself numerous times that when I hear things like this it is my job to change those "Attitudes". We must do "Whatever it takes" to make sure we are ready to answer the call when the bells go off. Training is what keeps us as firefighters safe and ready to do our jobs better and more effectively.
