Hey Frank, Good stuff. We have added a few wraps on the lower rung to act as a brake for heavier "loads" and to compensate for the possible dynamic load if the FF or unconscious victim loads the rope before the belay man is ready. Keep up the go...

Take risk or write it off. Part 2.

Back in January, I wrote a blog post asking the question, “Can we establish a common understanding of risk? Or.. should we write it off?” Because my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek when I posed the question, I don’t want the point to be missed. I believe our duty to ourselves and our beloved fire service cannot be separated from our duty to the citizens we are sworn to and are obligated to protect. What is good for us is good for them. My question is, are we seeing this trend to "let it bu… Continue

Take some time to keep-up with research that is important to all of us.

Often, we get caught-up in seeking information about tactics and task level training needs and desires. Additionally, a lot our members (especially the younger ones) spend a significant amount of searching the Internet for dramatic fire “videos”. Don’t get me wrong, there is value to both of these pursuits. However, I would also encourage all members from all age and seniority groups to spend more time looking at, reading and learning from several on-going research projects that have real signif… Continue

Can we establish a common understanding of risk? or.. Should we write it off?

Can we establish a common understanding of risk? I believe that this is a very difficult question to answer. Risk, is in the eye of the beholder. The ability to adequately assess risk demands a high level of experience and training, a keen eye for detail, a thorough knowledge of building construction and an ability to process and make sense of incomplete information (much of which is of dubious value). The decisions born of this process are always time critical, often life and death and have to… Continue

Reflections on the Indy VES video.

Brothers and Sisters,

Recently, a video of a VES operation in Indianapolis surfaced on several web-sites including this one. The responses on this site were, for the most part, thoughtful and informative. However, on others, not so much. This is not an indictment of those sites, one in fact is a very good site providing a great deal of useful training information. In any case, the level of criticism leveled at the participants was, in my opinion, over the top prompting a response from the Capta… Continue

I definitely hope you are holding your head up High because if anyone deserves it, you do. Leaders like you are so very few. I can only hope to have the courage you do when it is time to make a stand. God Bless you brother. You epitomize the word Chief.

Chief, men like you are what makes the brotherhood great.
Your story brought me to anger at the idiots in goverment & at the same time helped restore my faith that there still are men of character & courage.
Stay the course

Art,

We commend you on taking a stand for what is right. I am sure you have the infinite respect of the members of your department (more than you already did). Welcome back to the line (like you ever left), and we are proud to say that we know the most qualified and well-respected Lieutenant in the DPFD!

There are not many chiefs out there with the balls to stand-up to city admin, and now there is one less. Good luck!

Art,

Way to make a stand for what is right!! There are so many folks out there that think that the sky is falling when so many of us know the truth. I admire your courage to stand up to those who are making the rash decisions that affect us all. It is people like you, Jeff, Mike and Chris that truly understand what the brotherhood is all about! Keep your head up and keep charging forward. Like the other have said if you need anything just holler, I will be out in Chicago next week.

Stick to your guns. In the end all we have is our principles. Screw management if they can't stand to hear the truth spoken in the open light of day.
