Fire and Emergency Services Exploying:Safety Issues

We have about 6 young men ,that is in training .(Explorers)) One issue that requires particular attention is what the Fire and Emergency Service Explorer will be allowed to do at the emergency scene. Many departments allow Explorers to respond on the apparatus with trained personnel.A solid policy must be established as to what the Explorer may not do once he or she arrives on the scene. Explorers may not be substituted for trained personnel ''''''''must be equipped with personal protective equip… Continue

What If,Infectious diseases, like anthrax was to spread, what could we do?

The Russians made and vaccine-proof anthrax. The Americans asked to see it,and the Russians refused. If that's not frightening enough,Alibek told Diane Sawyer that Russian scientific publlications have reported a genetic marriage between smallpox and a brain virus called VEE.He believes they have engineered yet another deadly genetic merger -
Infectious diseases may be introduced into an unsuspecting U.S.population not only from natural human, animal,or plant sources but also deliberately as…

We usually have and Tenney union in Ohio in April.I have not been up North in two years,,keeping busy here. The Chief told us last night at our meeting calm before the storm. I hope we don't have and busy winter, putting out fires..But,that is our busiest time of the year. Keep safe ,you and your wife,Brenda T

Brenda- thanks for the note. I have no immediate relatives in Ohio (mostly New England). Our branch of the family landed in Rowley, MA in 1638 and I know they spread out west. Try the Tenney Family Association online; they have a ton of resources. You also share a first name with my wife, who is also a career firefighter. Be safe.

We have an explorer froup here and in the Suburb of Chicago where I started in the fire service. It's a great program. They say the way the first year is for a person in the fire service is the way they will be for the rest of their career. If we get them interested and working hrd they will be like that the rest of theri time. I know it affected me that way. We put up another question the "Common Sense Firefighting " page about roof operations, check it. I look forward to see the FD pictures also.
Take care Jim Mason Chgo FD

Glad to have you as a friend Brenda, You've got alot of duties at the firehouse. How big is the department total with all the firefighters?
I've been on a couple of different departments but never a combination dept. I'm sure that is a challenge.
We have another question on the "Common Sense Firefighting" about roof ventilation on commercial buildings, check it out.
