One Month Down

Ok, so I have made the big switch from EMS supervisor to Truck/Roving officer and it has been a month. It is a completely different beast. As an EMS supervisor, the work came to me, I had no time to sit back and relax, I was constantly on the go. However as a truck officer, I find there is more down time. I am spending time getting to know my truck and crew. I have already had a few issues but nothing that I couldn't deal with. Unfortunately, my comfort level with my new crew and my general…See More

"While having a good set of SOPs/SOGs is essential, some of those who write them make them far too complex. Some "adapt" exsiting versions without really reading them, some have no correlation to a Department's operations. My version…"

Questions about Standard Operating Procedures(Guidelines) or whatever your department calls them?

Recently I became aware that a local jurisdiction, which my department works closely, has no SOPs. I know at one point they had SOGs, that were very similar to my departments. I found this out during a training exercise. The exercise was a building fire and the first engine on location laid out from the hydrant. The second arriving piece was a supervisor (from my department), he took command and started running the fire ground. The next piece was the truck, followed closely by the final 2…See More

Have spent the last 4 years as an EMS shift supervisor and now i am moving to a Truck Company officer. I have spent the last fifteen years in the EMS division and need to retrain myself in truck ops. Although in recent training evolutions, I found out that things come back quickly. The initial training I received and constant company level training early in my career, engrained the core components of truck ops. I was thinking about using the blog to create a log of my journey.
