Company Officer's Role in Crew Safety

What are some of the methods you've used or implemented to promote firefighter safety at the company level?

Hey Chris,
Good question! I think the company officer has to build trust between his or herself and their crew. If you train your crew well, so that you know they can get the job done when asked, then you don't have to supervise the task you can supervise the crew and watchout for their safety. On understaffed companies the officer very easily gets drawn into the task, but if that happens who is watching out for your crew's safety? Do what you have to do to keep your hands off the tools! If you have to combine companies, or call for more help to get your assigned task done do it. A strong training regimen will build company pride and confidence and allow you to be the eyes and ears for your company at an incident.
