Uniform Shorts In The Fire Service

I am a Firefighter/Paramedic from Tumwater Washington and I am trying to get a short policy implemented. What we are hoping for is a policy that would allow us to wear shorts on duty from May to October. Obviously shorts would only be worn to standard EMS calls. What I am looking for is any information you may have on shorts being worn in your department. If there has been any increase in BSI issues or any increased safety problems. Anything will help. Thanks for your help in this.

Shawn, my Dept went to shorts with some strong fears as it pertains to communicable disease exposures. But, we have had zero exposures in 3 years to the leg area that would of been prevented if the FF/ Paramedic would of been wearing standard uniform pants. However a friend in another local Dept has received burns to his knees and shins that he feels would not of occured if he was wearing pants under his bunker pants. I don't agree but it's another issue to consider. The shorts on EMS calls are similar to short sleeves except it's not an area that we normally think of protecting or watching out for during PT care. With some good education and smart PT care I believe shorts have a place in EMS.
