Where firefighters come to talk training

In North Hudson, we have a Dept. Safety Committee. All ransk are represented on the committee. They meet once a month with the Chief to discuss safety-related issues relating to firehouses, equipment, policies, and personnel. This has been extremely effectrive and instrumental in proactively addressing issues around the Dept.. It has also been a huge help in heading off and circumventing grievances. What does your department do in regard to addressing safetyt issues? Is there a mechanism in place such as this one?

We have a Training and Safety Division that generally advises and enforces policy as well as educates members on safety issues, and maintains the department health and safety office as well as responsibilities for incident safety. Our local also maintains a safety officer that has input on policy/procedures and keeps members abreast of health and safety issues from the unions perspective. The idea of a full committe is an interesting one. It would get more of us in the loop, and maybe raise awareness of safety issues in all companies and divisions. I'll toss the idea around the kitchen this week.

the committee is a positive resource to potential conflict resolution without having ton resort (hopefully) to the grievance dredge

Chief,

We have Safety committees with both locals, but we don't meet on a regular basis. We seem to react to problems more than forsee them. Those higher on the food chain seem to be interested in safety, but a lot of things are hobbled by the town. Seems spending money on fire protection only seems important after a big job. But that interest quickly fades away. It sounds like a good idea trying to meet on a regular basis, I will bring that up, see what happens.
