-We run four man engine companies that have two nozzle types on the cross lays. Each cross lay is 200 ft. Anything longer is not safe or appropriate... the math just doesn't work.
-One line has an SM 20 fog and the other has a 15/16 playpipe.
-All 2 1/2 have a playpipe.

Mike,
Part of the response that I got had to do with not having "20 Engine Companies" showing up to the fire and therefore not enough people to make the stretch and do outside venting, IC, yada yada.
We have 7 people when we are full staff. The Capt stays outside and does IC and we usually have 4 on the only Engine that we run. Houses run to 50,00 plus sq ft and are second homes (usually empty).

Any further thoughts based on this?

Todd,
the question had more to do with what you can get done with the manning that you have on hand. Getting a 2.5 into play was the main thing.

We run at the career with 3-4 man engines and a 4 man truck plus 4 man crash crew and two man ambulance. We have all preconnected 1 3/4 triple lays with TFT nozzles. Combination dept. is whatever we can get on the trucks and 1 3/4 triple loads with tfts and our 2 1/2 or 3" have blitzfire monitors. All are 200 ft. in length. Volunteer covers 120 sq. miles and five stations. Carer we are a are medium sized installation with three firehouses and 100 personnel.

-As to staffing and district we run four man engines, four man ladders, four man squads and two medics on rescue/ambulances. Districts are usually smaller than a square mile, the city is a heavy urban setting.

FDNY has mostly 4-man engine co.'s and 5-man engines. We have 4 beds on the backstep. One bed of 3 1/2" hose for Hydrant and siamese connections; one bed of 2 1/2" hose for advanced fires on arrival, commercial occupancies and defensive ops.; 2 Beds w/ 6 lead lengths of 1 3/4" hose coupled to 2 1/2" hose to finish out the load.
