One more step...

It's hard to breath. Sweat stings my eyes until they blur and a bald head does nothing to stem the steady flow. I chose to be here. I live for this moment. My body begs to slow, to rest, to just quit. My heart says no. The family that surrounds me shares in my suffering. Their lungs burn too. Their muscles struggle to obey the message traveling down from the brain. Pain endured begets more pain but there is nowhere else we'd rather be."ONE MINUTE!" Moments later my mind computes the voice…See More

"Fire Porn" and other nonsense...

Its your very first day on the job. You walk into the firehouse with a stupid grin while balancing a box of doughnuts in one hand and your PPE in the other. Some old dude with a giant gray mustache barks "What are you doing here, ya jack wagon?" Take a minute; for realz. What called you to the fire service? Maybe the excitement, the lights, the sirens, the danger, just the adrenal…See More

The Sickness

I believe in the Fire Service.I believe in the men and women who make up our clan. Especially those who relentlessly pursued their passion years before most of us ever donned a helmet. They built our brotherhood and the honor belongs to them.I believe greatness is within us all. Sweat is the only key to it's release and there are no short cuts or trinkets that can make up for time and…See More

The Fireman I want to be...

The fireman I want to be...He gets to work at least a half hour early because he can't wait for his shift to start. He always offers to take a call for who he relieves, in part so they can get home to their family but mostly because there isn't much on this earth he'd rather do.He treats every customer with kindness without regard to how frequently they call or their social status. Without them he could not exist and he will always remember that.Every shift he seeks a way to better himself, his…See More

Iron Sharpens Iron

I want to answer 15 calls a shift.I want to see the sunrise after a 2nd alarm.I want to spend my career at our busiest stations. I will better myself mentally and physically for my calling every single day.I will treat every citizen and fellow firefighter with respect whether or not they deserve it.I will not be deterred, defeated, or dissuaded. Tell me I'm going to burn out. I'm sure…See More
