Reducing Firefighter Line Of Duty Deaths Through Wellness

All,

I am conducting a pilot study through the University of North Carolina at Pembroke to better understand organizational factors that influence wellness.

The research conducted in conjunction with this survey explains the need for multifaceted wellness programs that address aerobic fitness, mental health, recovery, nutrition, and sleep. These areas are interconnected and all attribute to cardiovascular disease risk.

Abundant research has examined the effects of total wellness on the fire service. The research suggests that by implementing preventative strategies involving risk screening, exercise training, and sleep hygiene, we could see a reduction in line of duty deaths. It is hypothesized that influential leadership with deliberate effort to inspire members to place priority on overall wellness will produce better habits that lead to a reduction of line of duty deaths.
