No Standpipe? Make One...

Photos by Brian Butler/Rob DooleyA few years ago while doing a fire preplan at an old parking garage downtown in our first due, we discovered the seven deck parking garage had no standpipe. So every year, we conduct a training exercise to make our own standpipe. There are several methods to…See More

Basement Fires

Basements and cellars are the most dangerous fire locations inside of a structure. With limited access, egress, and ventilation options, be prepared to take a hit at the top of the stairs. Fires in subdivisions have killed more firemen than all upper floor fires have. Descending down a chimney of intense heat and hot gases from above to fight a below grade fire is no easy task. There are several dangers the company officer will have to address before advancing on a fire in a subdivision or…See More

Chimney Fires

Chimney fires are rare events, which is why we should review our tactics for them every season to ensure a quick effective coordinated attack. Doing this will help prevent chimney fires from becoming all-out structure fires. If not controlled quickly, chimney fires have the potential for interior and exterior fire spread. Chimneys are vertical structures that ventilate smoke or hot gases from boilers, oil burners, fireplaces, stoves and furnaces to the outside atmosphere. The inside of a…See More

PARKING GARAGE FIRES

Photo by Steve Barnes / Times UnionFires in parking garages are rare incidents, which is why we should prepare for them by conducting fire preplans. A vehicle fire inside of a parking garage may seem like a simple job, until you arrive to find two cars burning on the top deck under solar panels with no standpipe, or an O.O.S (out of service) FDC.   Most fires in parking garages are burning vehicles. These PG fires can be difficult and may even have some structure fire similarities. When one or…See More

MACHINERY RESCUE: Will You Ever Get To Use That "Man vs Machine" Tool Box?

Photo by Brian ButlerEvery minute of the day brings the potential for a machinery rescue response. Think about it, how many vehicle extrications are there in the U.S. every single day? How many rings are cut off by rescue companies and emergency room personnel every single day? How many kids get their fingers stuck in toys, bicycle parts, or their head stuck between railings every single day? If we put vehicle extrication aside, many common machinery rescues are minor extrications,…See More

Ventilating Attic Fires With Solar Panels

By Brian ButlerWe are currently starting to see more photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on the roofs in urban area housing, especially in New Jersey which has the most solar panels per square mile in the U.S.  PV solar panels will be problematic when performing roof ventilation and ladder placement. In addition, the panels are…See More
