Urban to Suburban Fire Tactics
- Buildings vary in style and construction
throughout the country; however, one constant remains: doing our job
effectively–fire extinguishment and the preservation of life. Staffing issues
impact tactics, but that does not mean that fire operations always have to
suffer. Poor tactics are often more of a hindrance to success than staffing.
Tactics that work for engine and ladder companies in urban and suburban areas
are not always vastly different; both should be based on progressive
firefighting. This class will break down how to operate at the four most common
types of buildings found in urban and suburban response areas. Engine and ladder
company operations will be examined to determine the best operational guidelines
for each building type, and with the staffing assembled. This class is designed
to highlight the commonality of tasks that need to be accomplished at structural
fires in various occupancies while addressing the uniqueness of staffing and its
impact on operations. Find out what your true fireground priorities should be.

Engine Company Errors the Dirty
Dozen - Lt McCormack
outlines the twelve most common errors made by Engine Companies on the
fireground and how to recognize there development, how to correct them and
ultimately how to avoid them. The engine company is everyone’s safety net on the
fireground. Error elimination from the rookie to the incident commander is the
goal.

Engine Company Operations: Gallons
Per Second - The focus is
on exceeding fire flow needs and still managing water during the crucial initial
hose-line advancement in an interior offensive attack. Learn why it is necessary
to think in terms of gallons per second at this time. Strategies are presented
for managing the booster tank supply until a sustainable water supply has been
established. The class is especially relevant for engine companies that commonly
engage with the booster tank and deploy fast attack tactics.

Ray McCormack is a 29 year
veteran of the FDNY and a Lieutenant currently assigned to Ladder Company 28 in
Harlem. He previously served in Engine Company 69 for over ten years. He is the
Publisher and Editor of Urban Firefighter Magazine. His weekly fire service
safety column Tactical Safety and his Engine Company Training Minutes videos can
be seen at urbanfirefighter.com. He created and produced Urban Essentials the
largest HOT class at FDIC this year. Lieutenant McCormack has taught at many
fire conferences and academies throughout the country on operational tactics and
leadership. He delivered the Keynote address at FDIC in 2009.

Curt Isakson is a 23 year
veteran and currently serves as Battalion Chief & Chief of Special
Operations with Escambia County Fire Rescue (FL). Chief Isakson has served in
volunteer, career, and combination FD’s. He has held all ranks up to Battalion
Chief in both volunteer and career. He started with Midway Fire Protection
District and has served with the City of Mary Esther and Pensacola FD before
becoming the first Training Officer for the newly formed Escambia County Fire
Rescue in 2000. During his career he has been assigned to the busiest companies
with-in his department. He is a past speaker for FDIC workshops and Conference
classes; to include Engine Operations HOT. Chief Isakson speaks frequently at
Fire Conference around the country. He is a Florida certified Instructor and
Fire Officer. He is the owner of Suburban Fire Training, LLC and has annual
contracts with five departments to provide monthly training and coordinate multi
agency training in northwest Florida.
