Fire Engineering Training Community

Where firefighters come to talk training

While we are rewriting SOG's, the inevitable debates hold things up, for some things there just is no clear cut answer and each side can make a good case for their argument. Our main debate has been over how to handle communications in relation to radio channels if a RIT gets deployed because it now becomes 2 operations, the original fire, and the new FF rescue. If it is anything other than a quick rescue, it will take some airtime, especially if communicating with the lost/hurt FF. We all know the original fire takes airtime. It would be hard to move radio channels mid-stream. Does anyone have input or ideas on how they think it best to handle this. I know there is no one pat answer, too many variables, but just looking for some more things to consider.

RIT always stays on the channel that the MAYDAY crew called for help on. They might be entraped or otherwise unable to change radio channels, so you go the channel that they are on. Fire operations goes to the next available TAC channel. IC need to do a real good check-in of all the non-RIT units that move to the new operations channel.
