Fire Engineering Training Community

Where firefighters come to talk training

With all of the emergency services personnel that are being injured or killed on the roadways, what do you do to prevent incidents from happening to you and your colleagues while on the road?
We have implemented a procedure in our department that the Driver/Operator is required to wear a DOT Approved Traffic Safety Vest at all times while operating around the apparatus. Also, unless you have an SCBA on all firefighters need to wear a vest while working around the apparatus. This has carried over too we always wear them when we are not in an SCBA.
Is it overkill? Probably!
Will it prevent all accidents? Probably not!
But at least we are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our members.
DON’T be the next one, BE safe!
