Fire Engineering Training Community

Where firefighters come to talk training

PURPOSE
The Purpose of the First Five Minutes is to visit, on a regular basis, retail, commercial, industrial or multi-family structures. By doing so, we can research, study, evaluate and discuss strategies and tactics in the event we answer an alarm to any of the locations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Demonstrate the ability to accurately size-up an incident using accepted practices within the____________ Fire Department.
• Identify incident problems.
• Develop strategies and tactics to address each incident problem.
• Implement an incident action plan.

OUTLINE
□ The Training Division will publish a one year schedule for the line of duty death reports and first five minute reports so that each station will have plenty of notice to prepare for your presentation. Each month, one station will deliver a report on the last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the monthly training calendar. LODD reports will be once a quarter and the first five minute reports will be twice. The Division Chief of Training will present the report for the month of December.

□ Each station will be expected to develop and deliver a 30 minute presentation on the location of your choice that involves a retail, commercial, industrial or multi-family structure.

□ You will be expected to take pictures of each side of the structure and draw a site plan on the white board of the location.

□ With assistance from the training chief, you will be expected to use the computer simulation program to add fire and smoke to your structure, creating a simulation.

□ Once the simulation is ready, use class participants to size-up the incident, identify incident problems and develop an incident action plan (strategy and tactics) to address each incident problem. Work within the scope of the first five minutes of an incident. Discuss the incident at the conclusion of the incident.

FINALLY
I ask that senior members get involved in this project and that the company officer make some final comments, and not just assign this to our new guys…..this is too important and we need to hear from experience.

Every effort will be made to allow time for these presentations as scheduled. You are doing the work, I will do whatever I can to see that other activities do not conflict with your scheduled time. If we get busy and cannot conduct training because of emergency calls, we will schedule a make-up date ASAP.

AS ALWAYS, STAY SAFE

I hear you...but you know, as long as there is training going on, and younger firefighters are learning from the more experienced, maybe we just bite our tongue and let them take the credit if it gets them involved.
Excellent Idea!

When you say the Training Division will publish the 1st five minute reports, what do you mean?
What I do is assign the drill to the stations. Each month one station does the drill for the entire shift. They choose the topic and present the class. One of our guys at station 5 archives the reports. They have a lot of fune with once they get started.
To borrow a phrase from Zig Ziglar, "Everyone knows it ain't the whistle that pulls the train!"
If they grab the credit, the drill still takes place and knowledge is passed and discussed.
Let the train roll on...
