Where firefighters come to talk training

Firefighter Michelle Maher's sexual discrimination suit against the Frenso Fire Department has been settled. The single mom who claims she was forced out of the 2005 training academy, won her gender discrimination case last year, and the case had been on appeal.

The city agreed to pay $3,350,000 to settle the case, including $900,000 in legal fees.

A few months ago I posted a commentary related to this issue. When are we going to STOP VIOLATING our own firefighter’s civil rights? It appears that it will take a long time and a lot of money to change our behavior. This was an unnecessary lawsuit and if members of the fire service would only understand that we all deserve to be treated equally and respectfully and understand what we say or do will come back to bite us, possibly this behavior will stop. This firefighter was denied that chance of a lifetime to be an active firefighter in her community.

It’s a travesty.
