Where firefighters come to talk training

Question - Who in the fire service do you think would benefit the most from a leadership training program, company officers, field chief officers, or staff officers?
Question - Which of the above listed officers would be able to contribute the most to the leadership development of their department if they received leadership training?

I think both Eddie and Billy bring up good points (leadership begins at the beginning & "follower-ship" is an important skill). Company officers must be able to instill leadership qualities in their crews from the beginning. For example, being the last member in the apparatus when picking up from calls on roadways to ensure all you members are back in the apparatus safe is one way company officers show their crew members they care. As Chief Salka puts it: "First In-Last Out", that is, show your members that you will take the lead and ensure they go home safe.

Finally, put all members of your team, be it an engine company or a special operations team in a leadership role from time to time. This creates several learning opportunities, among them is the company officers assessment of their crew's ability to handle adversity, team members ability to assess their own strengths and weaknesses, and team cohesion.

Great questions. The company officer is the answer to both questions for all of the reasons already stated.
