Where firefighters come to talk training

I am thinking about going into the fire dept. and know some things about it. I was listening to the scanner the other day and a fire dept called into dispatch and said switching to fire ground. I was wondering what does that mean exactly.

It is just another operating channel on their radio system. Many departments will switch to an operating channel on their radios when they are working at an incident. By switching to a different channel they do not have radio traffic from other incidents interfering with their operations, nor are they interfering with the dispatching of additional runs. Hope this answers your question.
