Where firefighters come to talk training

It is easy to designate the sides of a building with ABCD when the structure is square or rectangular. How do you designate the sides of an 'L'-shaped or 'H'-shaped building?

Keep it simple. There are four sides. If there is some large building with a weird shape (buildings with long walkways connecting them, for example), sector it off till you can fit it inside a square and the front door (or where ever Command calls it) is Alpha. To answer your question above, I would call it as the top of the H as being " Charlie side courtyard".
I would keep it simple with only 4 sides. If as the IC, you assigned me and my company to "A" side then we are responsible for everything on that Alpha side(courtyards, hallways, extensions, etc...no matter how many walls we may or may not have). This may call for more manpower and more companies being assigned as well as a Chief or senior Officer assigned as "A" side Command.
