Folks,Alaska has a well earned reputation for the snow and cold, but I am wondering if our rescue efforts in those environments, and the training to get our rescuers safely to snowbound rescue sites are in tune with others across the country.  IF any of you have a snowmachine / snowmobile based off-road rescue entity, how do you driver train your crews to handle the machines in a safe manner, prior to heading out into the great outdoors?  I have seen programs that do great service to the other…See More

Profile Information

Lives in:
Fairbanks
Department:
Fairbanks Airport Police & Fire
Title/rank:
Sergeant
Years of public service:
16
Agency structure:
Public safety (police-fire)
Top issues in your department:
Manning, and lack of cohesive and comprehensive training program. We are a small department with great people stepping up day after day, but we also play catch-up alot without a dedicated training officer to implement, oversee, and provide quality control to a training program. Add miniscule manning numbers and the ability for members to change shifts every six months, and you end up chasing your tail trying to provide realistic, comprehensive training.
Professional Qualifications:
Alaska & IFSAC FF-II, Instructor II, ETT
Topics you provide training for:
ARFF, CEVO II, FF-II, FF-I, RIT (occasionally), MOI (occasionally), Calling the Mayday (soon).
Areas of expertise:
ARFF and firefighter basics - laying the groundwork for success, that's where my passion lies.
Bio:
18 years in the emergency services, and I have loved every minute of it. I love my calling and the people in it inspire me every day. I have never forgot my mentors past and present, and will never stop trying to make sure I repay their efforts through the next generation of firefighters. I have a family that lovingly tolerates me and my crazy schedules and jaunts around the state for teaching, and I am eternally grateful for their support!

The look on their eyes when they got out of the ambulance was priceless!!!! Safety glasses, OB kit in hand, they were ready! I asked the medic if he wanted to deliver and he could barely nod up and down to say yes!! Love it.
