Shaft Fire in 3 Story Multiple Dwelling

Battalion Chief Daniel Sheridan FDNY

 

The Fire Department is receiving numerous calls for a report of smoke coming from a store on the 1st floor of a 3 story Non Fire Proof Multiple Dwelling. The Building has 2 apartments per floor and 1 open unenclosed stairway.

  • People are also reporting that the smoke is entering the floors above
  • There are numerous people reporting that they are trapped in their apartments on the floors above the fire.
  • Fire has also communicated to the interior air and light shaft on the floors above
  • The windows in the shaft are beginning to fail and fire is getting into the rooms along the shaft

 

It is a Sunday Morning at 0600 hours.

The City Fire Department dispatches 3 engines, 1 ladder, a rescue and a Brigade Chief. Upon arrival the Chief is confronted with the following scenario.

 

Based upon the scenario depicted:

 

  • Where would you set up the Command Post
  • Which building would you consider the fire building and which is the exposure
  • Why is this important to clarify
  • What additional resources would you call for
  • What are your Priorities:
    • 1st
    • 2nd
    • 3rd
    • 4th
    • 5th
    • Where would you place your Aerial Ladder(s)
    • Where would you stretch your first hose line , second hose line
    • How would you stretch your hose line(s)
    • Where is the most severe life hazard
