The role of the sounding firefighter is critical to the vertical ventilation team. The sounding firefighter should be considered the point man of the operation. The temptation to train on cutting operations and ladder work is strong however training in the total operation is important especially in the role of the sounding firefighter. An experienced sounding firefighter makes the operation safer more efficient and increases the odds of success.
