FEMA Update ICS PTBs

FEMAs NIMS Integration Center has released updated Position Task Books and Guidance to assist jurisdictions with aligning with the National Qualification System.

Discussion:  For agencies that seek to work during emergencies and disasters, having a benchmark for determining capabilities and capacities is necessary for planning and response operations.  The National Qualification System establishes a common framework for personnel and team capabilities, allowing for better integration of capabilities during large scale incidents.

Attack on Concert Foiled

Austrian authorities recently announced that they had interrupted plans to attack at a concert in Vienna.  Searches of the suspects residence revealed the presence of chemicals which may have been used during the planned attack.

Discussion:  The use of chemicals for planned terrorist or criminal activity is not common but remains a threat that should be included in planning scenarios.  The ability to identify the presence of chemical agents, provide mass decontamination, medical treatment, reunification, decontamination of service animals and durable medical equipment all figure into the response planning matrix and should be considered for planning and response purposes.  Integration of response personnel into fusion centers with dissemination of threats and hazards to field personnel is also critical to ensuring effective response and ensuring responder health and safety.

Openings at National Fire Academy

Due to low enrollment, the National Fire Academy has already cancelled some classes in the October-December academic quarter and more classes face cancellation.

Discussion:  The NFA provides no-cost classes that provide high level instruction that is unavailable at the state and local level.  The NFA provides lodging and a travel stipend to help offset the costs of training.  In addition, the classes have been assessed for college credit and may be accepted for those seeking a degree.  Visit the NFA program page for more information or to sign up.  When signing up, make sure to select academic year 2025 to find open classes.

Upcoming Hazardous Materials Conferences

Several hazardous materials conferences are open for registration.

Discussion:  Continuing training is critical to maintaining competency and gaining new skills.   HOTZONE and the Indiana Hazardous Materials Conference are open for registration and provide excellent training opportunities.
