Post-9/11 and the global financial crisis, the field of risk management in terms of the financial sector has boomed and transformed from an unknown niche to an in-demand specialty. Saving people’s money, however, only remains possible when there’s people to have said money; saving people is just as needed. With a Master of Science in Public Safety Administration (MSPSA), you can take the integral steps to being a hero at home and at the workplace.
Visual of 2008's Great Recession
When disaster strikes, who do you imagine taking charge? Firefighters sliding down the pole, axes in hand, ready to fend off earth and fire. Police officers sent in to keep order and protect the vulnerable. Paramedics tending to the hurt, sirens blaring as they sprint back and forth from the hospitals. But do these brave people run into battle haphazardly? No, they’ve been trained with brilliant strategies to fight disasters, and that is where the emergency management specialist comes in.
Named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the 50 best jobs of 2011, with prospects only increasing over the next decade, emergency management specialists can be seen as the mastermind behind the on-the-ground action that disaster relief takes on. Aided by an MSPSA -- offered by many online schools such as Lewis University -- a comprehensive course load of ethical, legal, and logistical ways to streamline emergency relief programs before disaster ever strikes is what the student in these programs will learn.
Following degree completion, they’ll be even more excited to learn about their future prospects. Emergency management specialists are used in nearly every public institution one can imagine, from local and national governments to hospitals to universities. With median salaries hovering above $50,000 a year, the fast-paced job environment has both esoteric and tangible rewards to entering this career field.
Ashville, NC's HAZMAT in Rail Drill
Everybody dreams of being the hero, but few ask how to be the superhero sitting in the middle of the table, plotting out elaborate escape plans and methods of saving the world. With an MSPSA the gap between citizen and savior has never been lesser.
If quick thinking is enticing; if team-building has been your forte since grade school; if having the fate of a city in the palm of your hands boosts your adrenaline, then becoming an emergency management specialist is the only logical step to take. Chaos is inevitable. Saving the world from such events depends on you.
