Where firefighters come to talk training

Take a Moment

As I write and I travel to talk and teach across this great country, I am humbled and honored by the feedback and comments that I receive. The comments that always hit home for me are from people who comment that they felt as if we were sitting around the firehouse coffee table just having a chat.

I think that relaxed conversation and disregarding everything that may tend to detract from that is the most effective way to communicate, to teach, to share, to develop dialogue, to solve problems, to overcome issues and to bridge gaps that are sometimes viewed as insurmountable.

Last night, Dr. William C. (Billy) Bosher Jr., a world renowned educator, a local leader, a community and church friend and a trusted resource passed away in his sleep at the age of 68. He will be missed.

Allow me to take a moment to remember. Many years ago, when our children were playing Little League baseball and softball, I tried to be like my Father and to not miss a game. Sometimes I even went to the baseball fields when our children were not playing and I joked with my wife that I was taking her out to dinner and we would have cheeseburgers and fries at the ballpark. She was most patient.

One summer evening at the ballpark, I was watching our children playing ball. On a nearby field, I saw Mrs. Billy Bosher arrive to watch their son Cleve play. Shortly thereafter, Mr. and Mrs. William Bosher Sr. arrived for their grandson’s game. A few minutes later Dr. Billy Bosher arrived attired in his business suit and his trademark bowtie. After a few minutes, Dr. and Mrs. Paul Bosher arrived and they sat with the family to watch their nephew, play a simple game that is played with a ball and a stick.

A few days later, for no reason at all, I took a moment and sent an email to Dr. Billy Bosher about this baseball game. I paraphrase the email here:

Dear Dr. Billy,

Last week I attended a Little League baseball game in Mechanicsville.

I have a great love of baseball and as you know I played quite a bit during my younger days. I have always believed that baseball teaches us so much more about life than just baseball, especially in the areas of teamwork, coaching, mentoring, fair play, taking the high ground, controlling the finish line and handling winning and losing.

At this particular game, I couldn’t help but notice from the bleachers nearby, the importance of family taking a moment from their busy lives to watch a kid play a game. I saw your wife arrive and then your Mom and Dad and then you and then Dr. Paul and his wife arrived for a simple game played with a ball and a stick. How much was that moment worth to young Cleve as he prepared to play? Thank you for the lesson and the refresher class, it means so much.

The student may have been cutting class, but I was watching and listening from the bushes outside.

Not only did Dr. William C. Bosher Jr. take a moment to attend a simple game, he took a moment to call me and to send a very kind email reply that said “You are the teacher and I am the student, your email means so much and was shared with the entire family over dinner. What a lesson and what a refresher, Thank You so much.”

Take a moment from your busy day to watch kids playing baseball, or to make repairs to a strained relationship at home or at work. Maybe distance was once an excuse for separated friends but no more.

Take a moment, it may be all we have.

What is a hello worth?

How are you my old friend?

How really busy are you?

Let’s sit around the table and chat.

Thinking of you for no reason at all.

Take a moment to have a great day – it’s a GREAT day for it.
