A LESSON FROM 38 SPECIAL

Let's have a show of hands, figuratively speaking... Who likes to be micromanaged and placed under the ever-present scrutiny of a magnifying glass? If you raised your hand, please quietly leave my blog now - I'm sure there's a mega-corporate blog out there in Internetland just for you!

Great leaders lead by placing trust in their subordinates and empowering them to strive for greatness! They inspire and encourage, they give credit when it's due and never place the limelight on themselves or their own accomplishments.

Give trust and you will receive trust!! Sounds simple enough, eh? Is trust taxing at times? Yes. Is trust betrayed at times? Yes. Is trust rewarded with outstanding performance and respect? Almost always, YES!

Unfortunately, when trust is not present, ridged control takes over with iron-fisted oversight and micromanagement of common tasks. What's more, control can not be maintained and is misleading - just when you think you have a tight grasp, it slips away. It is a lot like riding a horse, when you pull the reigns too tight the horse will buck and become unruly, people are no different!

I'm reminded of a great song by 38 Special...

Just hold on loosely, but don't let her go.
If you cling too tightly, you're gonna lose control.
Your baby needs someone to believe in,
and a whole lot of space to breathe in.
