Well, as promised, here's my one-two punch commentary regarding fire service obesity (see previous blog post). We are aggressive when it comes to the hot-button dangers of lightweight construction, seat-belts, excessive speed, smoke toxins, etc... and all are important topics. But let's not forget the literal and metaphorical elephant in the room - our own weight and overall lack of fitness!
The fitness and nutrition discussion needs to be at the forefront and change must be made. After all, it is one of the few dangers we can control!

Paul, Great subject, As one of the Obese Fire Fighters , I have taken myself off interior Fire Fighter status (yes i'am a volunteer) just so my brothers don't have to save me , i still operate the trucks , run the pumps and pull hose , all part of the work out routine , But what really saved me was that PHYSICAL I had four years ago , when i found out i had really high blood pressure and type two diabetes , I now have both under control and have been tobacco free for a month now , and have took this picture and the other picture and placed them by my desk at work as a reminder and incentive to keep on the right track to making my health better ,
Take the first step and encourage others to do the same, GET THAT PHYSICAL! Find a way to get it done if your department will not sponsor it. Our health is so much more then just the extra pounds.
Thank you Paul. This is truly a large elephant. As one of the "big guys" it helps motivate me to continue to take steps to correct my health situation.
