Bio:
Larry Sagen
Director and Founder, FIRE 20/20™

Larry Sagen has worked with fire and emergency service departments throughout the US and Canada in the areas of community-based prevention, change management, and diversity recruitment and retention. In 2005 Larry Sagen started the non-profit, FIRE 20/20 to help fire and EMS departments more effectively connect with their multicultural communities to increase the reach and effectiveness of prevention and targeted recruitment programs. Larry led landmark research in 2005-2007 studying first responder and civilian safety in Calgary’s, Seattle’s, Milwaukee’s and Austin’s multicultural communities. The research was funded by a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from the Department of Homeland Security, a grant from the International Association of Fire Chiefs and funding from the City of Calgary, AB. In 2010 FIRE 20/20 is partnering with NASFM and IFMA to conduct a national study identifying specific issues career, combo and volunteer departments face in working with multicultural and high risk communities.

Prior to FIRE 20/20, Larry founded and directed the International Youth Hall of Fame, a non-profit that brought communities together to acknowledge and celebrate “everyday youth who were being extraordinary in their own way.” The Youth Hall of Fame was awarded honors by the Points of Light Foundation, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. In 2002, the International Youth Hall of Fame was merged with the Points of Light Foundation.

Larry has presented workshops and/or spoken at the following conferences: Metro Chiefs, FRI, the Burn Foundation, Canadian Fire Chiefs, IAFF EMS, IAFF Human Relations, FESHE, NFFF, IABPFF, NAHF, i-Women, FDIC, Washington Fire Marshals’ Roundtable, Texas Fire Marshals, and the California Ops Chiefs.

Larry has a Masters Degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelors Degree from the University of Minnesota.
