Bio:
Gord Schreiner joined the fire service in 1975. He is currently a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) and the Fire Chief of the Comox Fire Department, fire department consisting of five full-time staff and forty-five paid on call firefighters, serving approximately 20,000 citizens. Chief Schreiner was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 1987 and to Fire Chief in 2000. His duties also include operating a well-equipped fire training centre at the Comox Fire Station that is used by dozens of other fire departments.

Chief Schreiner is also a part-time instructor with the Justice Institute of British Columbia, Fire and Safety Division. In this role, he has traveled all over British Columbia and twice to Saudi Arabia, teaching several different fire service courses.
In 2010 Chief Schreiner received an “Award of Excellence” from the Justice Institute of BC. In 2004 Chief Schreiner received the “Trainer of the Year” award from the BC Fire Training Officers Association and in 2003 he received a “Public Safety Award” from the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Chief Schreiner was instrumental in starting the Comox Fire Department’s “Firefighter Youth Camp” where thirty-six high school students spend a week living and working at the fire station. The Comox Fire Department has hosted five such camps to date.

Chief Schreiner has served as the Chairperson of the Comox Valley Fire Chiefs Association for several years. In this role he was instrumental in bringing together ten local fire departments under a single Mutual Aid agreement.

Chief Schreiner also serves as the Educational Chair for the Fire Chiefs Association of British Columbia annual conferences, a role he has done for the past few years. Chief Schreiner has also served on several provincial committees.

Chief Schreiner has assisted the Office of the Fire Commissioner for British Columbia by serving as a “Venue Fire Commander” at the 2010 Winter Olympics and also as a “Structural Protection Specialist” at several British Columbia interface fires.

Over the years Chief Schreiner has been a strong role model and mentor to several firefighters from both his department and other fire departments. Chief Schreiner enjoys working with smaller fire departments, assisting them in many ways. He has developed a reputation of “getting things done” safely and effectively.

Chief Schreiner is known as a “workaholic” who emphasizes customer service and has done much to improve his fire department and the service to his community.
