We have annual mandatory physicals that everyone has to complete and be signed off on by the Dr.

In addition we've adoped the IAFF/IAFC Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness/Fitness Initiative. As part of that a couple years ago we started an annual mandatory Fitness Indicator Test. We have several members on line trained in fitness called Peer Fitness Trainers that administer the test and can also help members get on a fitness plan or work on goals. Our test consists of a SUB-maximal treadmill station (using the Gerkin treadmill protocol), then arm and leg dynamometer, grip strength, sit and reach (flexibility), and sit ups and push ups done by set standards for proper form, and also set to a metronome (sp?) for consistent speed and form. Those with the top 25% cumulative score then receive an extra 24hours off with pay the following year as an incentive for guys to get in shape.

It's certainly not perfect, but has had an effect on some that use to not exercise much.
