"Top Floor Fires" - This program is a discussion of the critical tasks and skills that are required to successfully battle a fire on the top floor of a multi-story building. Longer hose stretches and the threat of fire extending both up and into the cockloft or attic area is a real possibility and must be addressed early in the firefight. Even if fire does not extend to the attic, a substantial roof operation is required which presents another set of hazards and challenges. Top floor fires are difficult and dangerous but can be controlled and extinguished when fought with speed and skill.

"Tactics & Procedures for Fires in Private Dwellings" - One of the most common and dangerous fire operations faced by today's fire service is the house fire. Fires in private dwellings cause the most injuries and deaths to both civilians and firefighters and are fought every day across the nation by both small volunteer companies and large urban departments. What skills and tactics are required to fight a house fire? How many firefighters need to be on-scene to get the job done? What role does the IC play in these fires and what tactics need to be completed ahead of the others? Join FDNY Battalion Chief John Salka as he looks at these and other important questions about the "house fire".


John Salka is a 28 year veteran of the FDNY and the battalion commander of the 18th battalion in the Bronx. He teaches and instructs both inside the FDNY training academy and throughout the U.S. at major fire service conferences. He is the author of "First In, Last Out - Leadership Lessons From The New York Fire Department" and conducts lectures and workshops on leadership for both fire service and corporate audiences. He has instructed at the FDNY fire academy in several capacities including its probationary firefighter's school, firefighter's professional development program, the captain's development program and the battalion chiefs command course. He is a frequent author for the FDNYs WNYF magazine, Fire Engineering magazine and he is a contributing editor for Firehouse magazine. Chief Salka has been a featured speaker at the Firehouse Expo in Baltimore and the FDIC in Indianapolis. He received the "Training Achievement Award" at the 2001 FDIC for his "Get Out Alive" firefighter survival program which has been a model for many other such programs throughout the U.S. He can be reached at e-mail- fdny48cap@aol.com
