Fire Engineering Training Community

Where firefighters come to talk training

Hi my friends,

Happy to join this group, I'll start by a discussion about the reason of RIT team. In quality insurrance management, we use the "5 why" system, to resolve problem. The goal is to avoid the "first solution is the right one" method.

Using that, you face a problem, then ask "Why?" to the first answer, youb reply "Why?" and so on, with a minimum of 5 times. In many many cases, you find the right solution is absolutly not the first one.

I've a nice example with flashover container. On top of them, you can see "vent system". On ours, we don't have such. That's because we've made an analysis of the use of vent and discoverd they just add problem:

We have heat, and when it's too hot, it can burn students. So we add a vent system. The vent system let hot smoke going outside. But after that, we loose the hot smoke layer and the warning sign of flashover depend on the smoke (movement density of smoke and so on). So we have to wait for the fire to re-create smoke. But this use fuel. So we need to use a lot of fuel. But that's dangerous and can burn students. So we add a vent system. the vent system let hot smoke..... bla bla bla bla.

The solution IS the problem. What' we've done? Measuring the amount of fuel, in order to have all the warning sign, but without being able to rise to accident, and we use container without vent.

If I give that example, this is because, if you apply correctly this way of thinking, you will see that RIT team seems to exist because of no real tactics on the fire ground and bad use of nozzle. So, the RIT team seems, to me, as useful as the vent fot the container. You need it, because of the way you fight. But if you change the way you fight, you'll see it's of no use.

Just try the "5 why?" method and this will be a nice discussion.

Best regards

Pierre-Louis
