Volunteer Requirements in Combination Department

Here recently at our department we have been growing. We are a combination department of full time, part-time, and volunteer personnel. Our volunteers still run the department which is a whole seperate issue. We have about 5 or six dedicated volunteers and people come in all the time wanting to volunteer. We have been looking at changing our requirements for volunteers. So I was wondering what other departments do as far as how many hours a volunteer must complete each month. When do you give them a uniform and gear? When do they get pagers? And many more....So if you can just send me your protocols for volunteer requirements or a summary of how you do it at your department.

At my combi dept where I volunteer it's pretty much been the same since I have been there with only minor changes to keep up with the times and changing characteristics of society.

1. You must fill out an application
2. You must get a background (criminal history) and driving record no older than 30 days and and then you will have interviews scheduled by admin.
3. Must attend at least 4 trainings before any sort of gear or pager are issued.
4. Must complete level task booklets (this is one thing we have implemented over the last few years). There are 4 level books and also there are the required task booklets to drive GP. Supply, attack and custom cab apparatus as well.

I think our training requirements of at least half the training per month is a good standard but is a flexible guide to allow volunteers time with family and vacation.
