Where firefighters come to talk training

Just wanting to know if anyone has any input on a recruitment program I’m preparing to start up in my department. What I am wanting to start is working with the school districts in my area and seeing if they will provide a list of graduating high school students so we can send them congratulation/recruitment letters when they graduate. We are a 100% volunteer department that is running into the nationwide problem of participation out of our members. I’m sure that this will not solve the worlds problems when it comes to increasing volunteer participation but I think it is a start. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dan,

I have a few ideas for your department that has worked in ours.  The first is to start a firecorps junior firefighter or Explorer program to help recruit high school students.  The second is to talk with your city or township officials to get see if you can get a copy of the list of people moving to your area and/or have reached voting age.  This is a great resource that you can send use to mail out flyers to new people in your area.  Keep in mind that your best recruits are already volunteering somewhere in your area and just need guidance to your department.  Consider CPR/ First aid classes as an excellent way to find volunteers.
