Extrication "Quick Tip" #25 (Pull the KEYS)

This week’s “quick tip” seems basic; however, it is incredible how often this quick step is being overlooked. We must get into a habit of turning off the ignition and removing the key on motor vehicle crashes. It is a quick, easy, and often overlooked step. Typically, this will secure roughly 90% of the systems on any vehicle.  In gas, diesel, propane, and natural gas vehicles, fuel pumps will shut down leaving only residual fuel in fuel lines.  Relays in hybrids and electric vehicles will open, which ceases the flow of the electrical current through the high voltage lines. The distance to remove the key FOB will vary per manufacturer and you will hear a wide variety of distances.  Just remember that the vehicle must be placed in park on conventional vehicles to remove the ignition key.
