Bio:
My name is Michael Lanning. I have been in the fire service since 2008. Being a 4th generation fireman, I guess it was something I was just destined to do. I am currently a career firefighter for the City of Kannapolis as well as a volunteer fire chief. I am married and the father to 2 beautiful children, Hunter and Harper. In my spare time I’m either hunting, fishing, backpacking or somewhere in my kayak. Years’ worth of critical incidents in both my personal life and work has allowed me to hold Peer Support very close to my heart. My passion for Peer Support all started when I lost my best friend and father to suicide in 2013, left feeling completely alone and ashamed. Later that year the built up post-traumatic stress mixed with alcohol and drug abuse lead me to subsequently survive my own suicide attempt. What once filled me full of shame and endless darkness, is now my driving force for awareness, prevention and to break the stigma associated with all metal illnesses. My experiences led me to become involved in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), Crisis Intervention, and Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (FBHA) 5 Bugles 4 Change. I am always willing to help anyone in need, I’m only a phone call away.
